Toccata Capricciosa for Solo Cello Op. 36 (Rozsa)

(Miklos Rozsa)

This piece of music was written by the composer Miklos Rozsa in 1976, who was perhaps better known for his compositions that were used in Hollywood on more than a hundred film scores.  Although being a single movement the work has three discernible sections that run from lively to slow to extremely lively.

Rozsa wrote this work as a dedication to the memory of the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky who had died in 1976.   It was performed in concert by Timothy Landauer who also performed it at Rosza’s home for his birthday.

Recordings the piece is performed on include Exiles in Paradise: Emigre Composers in Hollywood, Hungarian Music for Cello and Piano and 3 Chamber Works along with Untitled by  Niklas Eppinger, Afierossis by Michael Heupel and A La Carte by Gyorgy Deri.
