Still, Still, Still

This is an Austrian Christmas lullaby dating from the early 1800s which was first published in 1865 in Salzburg folksongs with their tunes. It was a collection of folksongs that had been gathered by Vinzenz Maria Suss who was the founder of the Salzburg Museum who lived between 1802 and 1868.

The song has a melody from Salzburg which dates from 1819 and has various versions with English translations and arrangements along with the modern German version written by George Gotsch.

The text describes the baby Jesus being held safely and warmly while he sleeps in his mother’s arms while the angels watch over him.

It has been recorded numerous times by many international artists and ensembles.
