Song written by John Carter and Geoff Stephens which was originally sung by Mary Hopkin as an entry into Song for Europe aired on the It’s Cliff Richard TV series. The winning song would then become the UK’s entry into The Eurovision Song Contest in 1970.
It was performed at the contest in Amsterdam in 1970 and came in second with the winner being “All Kinds of Everything” performed by Ireland’s Dana.
The song lyrics are about someone hoping that they would find love at some point, after hoping for a long time, when eventually it was answered when the knock knocking was love asking to come in.
It was released as a single on the Apple label in March 1970 with “I’m Going to Fall in Love Again” on the B-side. The song reached No. 2 on the UK singles chart and remained on the chart for 14 weeks, gaining a platinum disc. It topped the chart in New Zealand and Singapore and the Top 10 in various other countries and was later released in the US in 1972 and reached No. 15 on the Billboard Easy Listening chart but only managed to reach No. 92 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song has had cover versions recorded by the singer Liv Maessen in 1970, The Chandeliers in 1975 and the singer-songwriter and session singer Andra Willis who had been a member of the Lawrence Welk Show. It was also recorded by cover artists on one of the series of Top of the Pops albums.
