Queensland Philharmonic

This orchestra was originally the Queensland Theatre Orchestra led by the music director George Tintner, which consisted of 31 musicians and was established in the mid-1970s. Their aim was to be an orchestra that concentrated on supplying the musical performances for ballet and operatic productions. For some years they were resident at the Thomas Dixon Centre thich it hared with the Queensland Ballet and Queensland Dance School of Excellence.

Within the next 15 years their acclaim rose and by the 1990s when they were known as the Queensland Philharmonic orchestra their recognition as a chamber orchestra directed by Anthony Camden, had risen to the point they toured Japan in 1991 and South Eat Asia in 1996. They also had the pleasure of accompanying guest artists such as James Galway, Sir Neville Marriner Pinchas Zukerman to name a few.

During the 1990s they commissioned two works by the composer Betty Beath and performed world premieres of works that include Lagu Lagu Manis II for chamber orchestra and Indonesian Diptych by Betty Beath, Triptych for orchestra by Robert Davidson and Transparencies in Violet for viola and string orchestra by John Gilfedder.

Their recordings include Christmas Day with the Quodlibet Singers, Selfish Giant by Graeme Koehne, New York Souvenirs by Nigel Sabin and Weber: Symphonies 1 and 2 et al led by John Georgiades They have also appeared on many compilation albums.

In the new millennium it was decided that the Philharmonic would merge with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and become The Queensland Orchestra in 2001. Led by the conductor Michael Christie they toured Japan the following year.

In 2010 The Queensland Orchestra were renamed and are now known as The Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
