Lichfield Cathedral Choir

This choir from Lichefield Cathedral is made up of three sections that sing separately or come together to perform for concerts and feast days, such as Easter and Christmas. It has been traced back to 1315 when the Lay Vicars Choral was first provided accommodation by Bishop Walter de Langton.

The sections are the Lay Vicars Choral, which sing the bass, alto and tenor parts, the Boys Choristers which sing the treble parts and the Girl Choristers which also sing the treble parts. All of the choristers from the boys and girls sections, with 18 full choristers in each section, attend the Lichfield Cathedral School. The choir is directed by the organist and Master of the Choristers.

The choir sings at the Cathedral Choral Eucharist each Sunday during term-time and maintains the tradition of singing Choral Evensong. It is also offers worship by regularly singing canticles and anthem.

The choir has been accompanied by orchestral ensembles, solo instruments and often by the resident organist and perform its singing outreach MusicShare concerts with schools from the diocese, which was established in 2003. It has been the host for other events that feature visiting performers.

It has given many radio and television broadcasts and made many recordings which include His Praises Sound,, Choral Music from Lichfield Cathedral, A Lichfield Celebration!, Ascensiontide Evensong, Sing Christmas Carols, Sings Music by Lichfield Composers, From Darkness Into Light: Music for Advent, Begone Dull Care, Every Corner Sing along with many others as well as performing on Christmas with Kiri Te Kanawa.
