I-Threes, The

This trio was formed in 1974 by the singers Marcia Griffiths, Rita Marley (Bob Marley’s wife) and Judy Mowatt. They came together when Rita and Judy had been backing for Marcia Griffiths in recordings she was making as part of the duo Bob & Marcia.

They became the backing singers for Bob Marley & The Wailers and this led them to success on all of their albums and countless hit singles such as “Buffalo Soldier”, “Could You Be Loved”, “Exodus”, “I Shot the Sheriff”, “Jammin’”, and “One Love” to name just a few.

Also performing in their own right, they opened for The Jackson 5 on their 1975 tour. Following the passing of Bob Marley in 1981 they continued to sing as a trio but eventually followed their separate solo careers.

Aside from their album recordings with Bob Marley in the 1970s they have also appeared on albums right into the 2000s such as It’s About Time by John Denver, Yitzhak Rabin by Alpha Blondy, Natty Universal Dread 1973-1979 by Big Youth and Dutchess by Fergie.
