He is a lyricist born in New York, New York, who studied at the City College in New York and served in the US Navy during WWI.
He wrote lyrics for vaudeville artists before writing for publishers on Tin Pan Alley. He worked in collaboration with composers such as Lou Handman, George Meyer and Arthur Johnson and he saw his greatest success when he teamed up with the composer Fred E. Ahlert and together they had hit songs such as “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”, “Mean to Me” and “Walkin’ My Baby Back Home”.
His songs have appeared in the films Babe: Pig in the City, Mona Lisa Smile and Look Who’s Talking Too amongst many others.
He died in Hollywood in 1934 aged 42 and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
