Shi Shucheng (1946-Present)

He is a pianist, conductor, composer and arranger born in Beijing, China who won first prize at the Beijing Children’s Concert Award while young. He became a student at the Central Conservatory of Music in 1958, when he was 12 years old and performed his first piano recital when he was sixteen. He graduated from the Conservatory in 1969 and became a soloist with the Central Orchestra that same year.

While with the orchestra he started concentrating on conducting and after taking studies he also began to conduct the Central Symphony Orchestra in 1981. Two years later in 1983 the Federal Republic of Germany awarded him a DAAD Scholarship and he studied abroad for the next three years, conducting in cities all over Germany and on television and radio broadcasts.

In 1989 the China National Symphony Orchestra assigned him to write a revision to the Yellow River Piano Concerto which had previously been arranged by Yin Chengzong, Liu Zhung, Chu Wanghua, Sheng Lihong and several others in 1969 from Xian Xinghai’s Yellow River Cantata.

He has been named as a National Class One Performer and was one of the first recipients of the Government Special Allowance given by the State Council. In 1981 and 1991 he was named an “Outstanding Expert” by the Ministry of Culture and was the first Chinese “Steinway & Sons Artist”.

He has performed over 1,000 concerts nationally and internationally as a pianist and conductor and the recordings he has performed on include his own Piano Solo: Shi Shucheng along with many albums and CDs of works that include the Yellow River Piano Concerto.
