He is a guitarist and singer-songwriter born in Sherwood, Nottingham, England whose mother died when he was 10 and three years later his father and step-mother moved to Melbourne, Australia, but the night before they went he ran away and they had to leave him to live with his uncle.
As a teenager he was heavily influenced by The Beatles and joined a local rock band as the drummer. He then joined his family in Melbourne and worked in a factory and played in coffee houses at night.
He met Russell Hitchcock in May 1975 when they appeared together in the Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar and in April 1976 they formed the band Air Supply and has written the majority of their songs.
He produced a rock opera called Sherwood and has also written the film score for the 1983 movie Now and Forever and appeared as the character Jon Loch in the film Believe in 2005.
