Eddie Miller carried “Release Me” around with him for four years and finally decided to lay it down himself. Jimmy Heap heard it on a jukebox and took it to #1. Ray Price and Kitty Wells followed suit and at one time all three versions were in the Top Ten.
In 1967 he won a Grammy Award, thanks to Engelbert Humperdinck’s recording which broke the all-time longevity record on the U.K. charts and hit #1 in nine different countries.
By the time Eddie passed away in 1977, the song had been covered over four hundred times. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975 and there is an Eddie Miller Week in his home state of Oklahoma.
