Beloved country and western lyricist who passed away on 9th August 2004. It is unclear as to what the cause of death was, although a friend said he was diabetic and had been receiving dialysis treatments. Sam left behind a catalogue of 179 songs listed with BMI and was nominated twice for the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year award, once for Don Williams’ #1 hit “I Believe In You” which he co-wrote with Roger Cook and once for “A Broken Wing”, recorded by Martina McBride, which he co-wrote with Cook, Phil Barnhart, and James House. Other artists who have sung his words include Sara Evans, Crystal Gayle, George Jones, Shania Twain, and Lee Ann Womack.
