He was a singer-songwriter also known as Steve Davis born in Hendersonville, Tennessee, who was only seventeen years old when he wrote his first hit song “Take Time To Know Her” recorded by Percy Sledge. This would lead on to many other songs that include “Eyes of a Stranger”, “Lonely Hearts”, “Love This Time” and “Sleepin’ With The Radio On” and the triple million-air certificate winner “Stand Beside Me” recorded by Jo Dee Messina.
His songs, written in collaboration with others, included “Addams Family Waltz” with Gary Cobb and Mark Sherrill, “Bedroom Eyes” with David Malloy, “Please Don’t Play A Love Song” with Billy Sherrill and Glenn Sutton, and “Too Far Gone” with Billy Sherrill.
Aside from recording several solo albums he wrote more than 400 songs recorded by other artists, wrote at least 18 No. 1 songs, had 18 BMI Awards, had 3 Million Air Performance Awards and two Grammy Award nominations.
He died on Boxing Day in 2022 when he was 73 years old.
