He is a violist born and brought up on a farm in Herndon, Kentucky, who began to play music with his family from an early age. He studied at the University of Kentucky, Yale School of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he was a soloist with the CIM Orchestra and was the recipient of the Robert Vernon Prize for Viola Performance.
He joined the Minnesota Orchestra and was awarded a McKnight Artist Fellowship for Performing Musicians in 2007. He became a member of the San Francisco Symphony in 2012.
Other orchestras he has played with include the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Vancouver Symphony.
As a chamber musician he was a co-founder of the Verklarte Quartet while at the CIM and with the ensemble was a grand prize winner at the Fischer Chamber Music Competition. He is also a co-founder and co-artistic director of the Duluth Chamber Music Festival and a founding member of the Ensemble SF.
Recordings he has performed on include S&M2 by Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony.
In the field of musical education he is a faculty member of The San Francisco Conservatory of Music and has been a teacher at the National Orchestral Institute and the San Francisco Academy Orchestra. He has worked as a mentor for the San Francisco Symphony’s Community of Music Makers program.
