Wright, Nicholas

Violinist who began his studies at four years of age and attended the Royal College of Music. His teachers included Rodney Friend, Itzhak Rashkovsky, and Ruggiero Ricci.

He debuted as a soloist with the “Romanze” of Antonin Dvorak on Radio 3, accompanied by the York Guildhall Orchestra.

He joined the London Symphony Orchestra in 2003. Other groups with whom he has worked include the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony, the English Chamber Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Oman Symphony, the Ulster Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

On 8^th May 2007, the LSO were joined by Angela Gheorghiu in a concert of opera highlights that included Georges Bizet’s “Habanera” from Carmen, George Frideric Handel’s “Lascia ch’io pianga” from Rinaldo, Pietro Mascagni’s “Intermezzo” from Cavalleria rusticana, and Giacomo Puccini’s “Un bel di vedremo” from Madama Butterfly.

Nicholas and French horn player Angela Barnes and pianist Martin Roscoe gave a recital of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Violin Sonata in F” (“Spring”), Johannes Brahms’ “Horn Trio” and Paul Dukas’s “Villanelle” on 7^th July 2008.

On 7^th February 2009, he reunited with the York Guildhall Orchestra in a performance of Ernest Bloch’s “Baal Shem”, Albert Ketelbey’s “In a Persian Market”, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s overture from The Abduction from the Seraglio, and Maurice Ravel’s “Sheherazade”.

He and pianist John Alley, cellist Amanda Truelove and violist Robert Turner appeared at St. Luke’s Jerwood Hall on 8^th November 2009 when they played a pair of piano quartets by Gustav Mahler and Alfred Schnittke as part of LSO Discovery Day.

On 22^nd January 2012, members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra interpreted Brahms’ “Clarinet Quintet”, which was sandwiched in between Mahler’s “Ruckert Lieder” and Edward Top’s Love Thy Neighbour at the Orpheum Theatre.

Recordings on which Nicholas appears include Alone Together by Gary Williams, classikhan by Chaka Khan, Lessons in Love by Lance Ellington with John Wilson and His Orchestra, and Solos from Ampleforth with the Boys of Ampleforth College.

In the field of music education, he has served on the faculty of the Vancouver Academy of Music.
