Williams, Ed “Lump”

He is a bassist, composer, computer consultant and teacher born Edward Williams whose father was a music teacher in a high school in Birmingham, Alabama. Getting his first tuition from his father he settled on learning the trombone, but after a time he decided to concentrate on the bass, which would become his main instrument in his professional career.

He took his further education at Nashville’s Tennessee State University and while there his talents got him notices and he found himself being asked to do session work in the studio as a sideman. This would see him working with many musicians and singers including Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band, John Hiatt, Chuck Mangione and Phil Royster. Stretching into composition, he also became a staff writer in Nashville for Combine Music Publishing and in later years has written for his own Jazz quartet and various other musical ensembles. Albums he has appeared on over the course of his career include Jimmy Buffett’s A White Sports Coat and a Pink Crustacean.

After gaining a degree from San Francisco State University he now teaches jazz bass there as well as music technology, arranging and composition at the San Francisco School of the Arts and is a Golden Gate Bass Camp instructor. Other places he has taught at include the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music and the Stanford Jazz Workshop.
