Wallfisch, Elizabeth (28th January 1952-Present)

She is a violinist and conductor born Elizabeth Hunt in Melbourne, Australia, whose twin sister was the late cellist Tanya Prochazka, mother was the oboist Tamara Coates and grandfather was the conductor Albert Coates.  Her husband is the cellist Raphael Wallfisch.

From a young age she showed a musical talent and debuted as a soloist by the time she was 12.  She studied at the Royal Academy of Music and while there she was awarded many prizes that included the Mozart Memorial Prize and the President’s Prize.

When she was 22 she received the award for  “Most Outstanding of Bach” in the Carl Flesch competition and she then began her career performing with orchestras that included the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Mozart Players.  She became acclaimed for her performances of Baroque works and has made many recordings by composers of that musical era.

She was a co-founder of The Localli Trio which has since changed it’s name to Convivium, the Oberlin Fortepiano Trio, and has performed with, or conducted, ensembles that include the Purcell Quartet, Raglan Baroque Players, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Hanover Band.

In the field of education she has taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London and held the posts of artist-in-residence at Melbourne University and Professor of Baroque Violin at Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
