Walker, Adam (26 December 1987–Present)

Self-taught flautist and pianist from Retford, Nottinghamshire, who attended Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, and studied with Michael Cox and Gitte Sorensen.

He and harpist Sally Pryce debuted with the Royal Philharmonic in May 2007 at Cadogan Hall in a performance Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Flute and Harp Concerto, K. 299”.  They reprised this work with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields on 17th July 2008.  On 25th August 2008, they gave the world premiere of David Bruce’s “Gigue for Flute and Harp” at the Presteigne Festival in Kinnerton, Wales.

Adam graduated from the RAM in 2009, and shortly thereafter became Principal Flute of the London Symphony Orchestra.  One of his first solo opportunities with the LSO occurred at Barbican Hall on 11th June 2009, when he interpreted “Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune” by Claude Debussy.

From 20th through 31st May 2010, he went on tour with guitarist Morgan Szymanski.  He teamed up with pianist Huw Watkins at the Gwyl Gregynog Festival in June 2010.  Their recital included Claude Debussy’s “Syrinx”, Francis Poulenc’s “Sonata”, Sergei Prokofiev’s “Sonata in D major, Op. 94”, and Watkins’ “Capriccio for Flute and Piano”.

On 1st April 2011, Adam participated in the Arcomis International Flute Event at BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff Bay, where he delivered the world premiere of “The Siduri Dances” by Brett Dean with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Other groups with whom he has worked include the BBC Scottish National Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Emerald Concert Orchestra, the Halle Orchestra, the Heath Quartet, Machaca, the Northern Sinfonia, the Sally Pryce Ensemble, Solistes Europeens, and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.

He and pianist James Baillieu went on a mini-tour of sorts in February 2012, with stops at Leighton House, the London School of Economics and Political Science, St. Luke’s Music Society, and Wigmore Hall.  Their repertoire included Samuel Barber’s “Canzone”, Bela Bartok’s “Suite Paysanne Hongroise”, Bohuslav Martinu’s “Scherzo”, Olivier Messiaen’s “5 Lecons de Solfege a chanter”, “Le merle noise” and “Vocalise”, Poulenc’s “Sonata”, Franz Schubert’s “Variationen uber das Lied ‘Trockene Blumen’ in E minor, D. 802”, and Charles-Marie Widor’s “Suite for Flute and Piano”.

On 15th July 2012, Adam handled the solo duties at Barbican Hall where the LSO joined forces with soprano Renee Fleming in a performance of Maurice Ravel’s Sheherazade.

In 2013 he released his first solo album Vocalise.
