Veltman, Alex

He is a cellist born in Moscow, Russia whose mother was also a cellist.  He studied at the Central School in Moscow before immigrating with his family to New York.  He took  further studies at the Juilliard School Preparatory School followed by the college, where he gained his bachelor’s degree in 1988.  He went on to attend Yale University School of Music where he earned his master’s degree.

While in New York he won several awards and scholarships and has performed with the New Haven Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, New York Symphonic Ensemble, was Assistant Principal Cello with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and a substitute cellist with the New York Philharmonic.  He also performed several recitals and has appeared on radio and television.

Participating in several music festivals he has performed at the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, the Saratoga Springs Summer Festival and was a soloist with the Bedford Springs Festival Orchestra.

He became a cellist with  The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1996 and during his time with them has performed at the Academy of Music Ballroom and Kimmel Center’s Perlman Theater as a chamber musician.

Recordings he has performed on include Peter Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra.

In the field of musical education he has been a faculty member of the Philadelphia International Music Festival.  He has also given master classes during the tour of China with The Philadelphia Orchestra and at the UMKC Conservatory and given private lessons online.
