Vaughn, Matthew

He is a trombone player born in Dallas, Texas, growing up in Richmond, Indiana who studied at Indiana University were he earned his Bachelor of Music and a Performer’s Certificate.  He went on to take graduate work at Indiana University and George Mason University in conducting and education.

He was the winner of solo competition of the Eastern Trombone Workshop and became a member of the Disneyland All-American College Jazz Band.  He did his service in he United States Air Force Concert Band .

Performing with several orchestras he has played with the Israel Philharmonic, the National Symphony and in Japan with Tokyo’s Super World Orchestra.  He held the position of Principal Trombone with the San Antonio Symphony and in 1999 became Associate Principal Trombone with The Philadelphia Orchestra.  He is now Co-Principal Trombone of the orchestra after already holding that position between 2012 and 2014.

As a soloist he has given performances with orchestras that include Lafayette Symphony, Indiana University Symphony, Richmond (Indiana) Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, the Temple University Band and the United States Air Force Band.

Recordings he has performed on include Peter Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra and  The Wall, Celebration and Your Nation’s Air Force by The United States Air Force Band

In the field of musical education he is the founder of the Bar Harbor Brass Week summer festival and has been a teacher at the University of Texas, where he was a member of he faculty brass quintet.  He is a teacher and coach on the faculties of Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance, the Curtis Institute of Music and The Philadelphia International Music Festival.  He has also given many master classes.
