Turner, Robert

Violist who has worked with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vuillaume String Quartet.

In July 2007, the Vuillaume String Quartet participated in the Florida International Festival.  Robert and cellist Hillary Jones gave a private concert in the home of Audrey Roseborough—104 years young—that included a portion of The Seasons by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.  Audrey was one of four home-bound Floridians who had been nominated to host an in-home recital as part of the festival’s effort to reach out to people who could not for whatever physical reason attend the festival itself.

The next day, 24th July, the Vuillaume String Quartet performed “Create a Concert” at Our Lady of Lourdes church in Daytona Beach.  The format of CAC was to have the audience pick which pieces to be played, as selected by the musicians before the concert.  Each musician had to try to convince the audience that his/her piece should be performed in its entirety.  Then, the audience voted, hence creating the concert.

On 26th March 2009, Hillary and Robert paid a visit to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts.  This was part of the Musicians on Call sponsored by Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., a community outreach program designed to bring music to hospitals, community centers, and schools.

Robert has also been active LSO Discovery Day, an educational outreach program designed to entertain and inform.  On 8th November 2009, he and pianist John Alley, cellist Amanda Truelove and violinist Nicholas Wright interpreted the piano quartets of Gustav Mahler and Alfred Schnittke in Jerwood Hall at LSO St. Luke’s.

Amanda and Robert teamed up with violinists David Alberman and Gabrielle Painter for Janacek LSO Discovery Day in Jerwood Hall on 10th October 2010.  The recital consisted of Leos Janacek’s “String Quartet No. 2” (“Intimate Letters”) and a talk by Gavin Plumley.

On 13th March 2011, Amanda, David and Robert joined violinist Rhys Watkins for Beethoven LSO Discovery Day, which included “String Quartet No. 8 in E minor, Op. 59, No. 2” (“Razumovsky”) and question-and-answer time with Rachel Leach and the quartet.

The LSO offered up “Dances from Powder Her Face” by Thomas Ades, “Symphony No. 1” by Sir Edward Elgar and the “Viola Concerto” of William Walton, with soloist Antoine Tamestit, at the Barbican on 10th January 2012.

Recordings on which Robert appears include:  the soundtrack of Atlantis, with music composed by Eric Serra; The Christmas Album and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays Hits of Pink Floyd with the RPO; ClassikhanThe Dust Bowl Symphony and Symphony No. 1 Inspired by The Lord of the Rings by Johan de Meij with the LSO; Fresh Aire 8 by Mannheim Steamroller; and, Viento del Sur by Luis Cobos.
