He is a singer and keyboard player who was born in San Diego, California. He was a member of the Cosmic Brotherhood and formed The Richard Thompson Trio.
He replaced Russ Giguere in the pop group The Association in 1970 and was replaced in turn by Ric Ulsky in 1974.
