Thatcher, Sabina

She is a violist born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, who too her studies at the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School.

When she was young she was a member of The Augustana Orchestra and the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra.

In her professional career in music she joined The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra as Principal Viola in 1989.  Since then she has featured in many performances with them including Benjamin Britten’s Lachrymae, the Viola Concerto by John Harbison, Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, Octet and Scottish Symphony and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante.

She has also performed and recorded as a chamber musician with the Rosalyra String Quartet and the Brandenburg Ensemble and played at several national and international music festivals.

Taking part in competition she has won a prize at the Hudson Valley Competition and been a finalist at the Naumberg International Viola Competition.  In 2000 she was the recipient of a McKnight Artist Fellowship.

In 2010 she was a guest artist at the William Primrose Memorial Concert at the Madsen Recital Hall in Utah and in 2011 she went back to South Dakota and performed with the Augustana College & Community Orchestra in Sioux Falls.  Also in 2001 she was a consultant on the stage production of the play “Opus” by Michael Hollinger.

No stranger to the recording studio she can be heard playing on albums such as Time and Chance by Color Me Badd, Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice, Daniel Godfrey: Wringed Moon by Members of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra,  The Mando Chronicles and When the Last Morning Glory Blooms by Peter Ostroushko and Copland: Appalachian Spring  and Kodaly/Bartok by The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and recordings of Bela Bartok, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms and Dmitri Shostakovich with the Rosalyra String Quartet.

In the field of musical education she is a faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School and Mercer University’s Robert McDuffie Center for Strings.
