Tempel, Thomas

Multi-reed musician from Minnesota who attended the University of Minnesota and studied oboe with Rhadames Angelucci.

In the spring of 1969, he went on a tour of Russia with the University of Minnesota Concert Wind Ensemble. Before the year was out, he became a member of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

He was the featured soloist when the SPCO interpreted Benedetto Marcello’s “Oboe Concerto in C minor” as broadcast by Minnesota Public Radio on 9^th December 1970.

On 21^st and 22^nd December 1979, he and Richard Killmer were the solo oboes d’amore in a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat in D major, BWV 243 with the Dale Warland Singers and SPCO in I.A. O’Shaughnessy Auditorium at the College of St. Catherine.

They reunited for Baroque Series Concert III at the Temple of Aaron for a rendering of Tomas Albinoni’s “Concerto in C major for Two Oboes, Op. 7, No. 5” on 12^th November 1980.

On 24^th May 1997, Thomas and Kathryn Greenbank teamed up for Albinoni’s “Concerto in C for Two Oboes, Op. 9, No. 9”. Bobby McFerrin conducted the SPCO in this concert that was aired by MPR on 3^rd April 2000.

Thomas took up English horn duties on 20^th May 2005 when the SPCO offered up Aaron Copland’s “Nonet” and “Quiet City”.

In 2007, the SPCO went on a European tour that included stops in Berlin, Budapest, Maribor, Vienna, Warsaw and Zagreb.

He was back on horn when the SPCO Winds gave a recital of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Sextet”, Georges Enesco’s “Dixtour” and Alec Wilder’s “Quintet No. 2” at the SPCO Center Music Room of 25^th October 2009.

He retired from the SPCO in 2013 after performing with them for 44 years.

In the field of music education, he has served on the faculties of Gustavus Adolphus College and the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts.
