He is a violist and teacher who was born with an illness that necessitated the amputation of his legs below the knee when he was three years old. Two years later he was fitted with prosthetic limbs.
He took studies at Montreal’s McGill University, the University of Toronto and the Banff School of Fine Arts.
He joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as Principal Violist in 1977 but has also held that same position with the Canadian Opera Company, the Mainly Mozart Orchestra, the Northern Lights Music Festival and the National Ballet Orchestra, who he performed with during the premiere of the Rudolf Nureyev commissioned Four Schumann Pieces and the tours by the dancer.
An accomplished chamber musician, he has performed with the Toronto Symphony in many performances as well as with smaller ensembles such as his co-founded Accordes string quintet and the Amaro String Quartet.
Busy in the recording studio he has worked as a session musician with many popular artists that include Placido Domingo, Hagood Hardy, Loreena McKennitt, Anne Murray and has performed on the movie soundtrack of Aftermath: Remnants of War and Marion Bridge and on music for television programmes such as The Road to Avonlea, Street Legal and Robocop.
His album credits are many and, outside of his recordings with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, some of these include Tremolo by Blue Rodeo, Baby It’s Cold Outside by Holly Cole. The Grande Passion: World Sinfonia by Al Di Meola, The Day After That by Liza Minnelli, One Light One Sun by Raffi, Orchestra by Peter Ustinov and the Classical Kids albums Beethoven Lives Upstairs and Tchaikovsky Discovers America.
In the field of musical education he has taught many students at educational establishments in Toronto such as its Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto, as well as with Orchestras such as the National Academy Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra.
