Tarlton, Neil

He is a virtuoso double bass payer, teacher, transcriber and author who began performing from a young age and played with the National Youth Orchestra and at the Royal Manchester College of Music as a Junior Exhibitioner.

He became a student at the Royal College of Music and during those years he performed with the Northern Sinfonia. He also played for the Scottish Opera as a Guest Principal Bass.

After leaving the Royal College of Music following his graduation he opted to become a freelance musician. This saw him working with countless British orchestras that include BBC Northern, the Royal Ballet, Scottish Theatre Ballet and Welsh Opera as well as many others located in London.

He performed regularly as a chamber musician with the Philomusica of London as well as working with the New Philharmonia Orchestra and then in 1976 he went to work with the BBC Welsh Symphony as their Principal Bass. He remained in that position until 1979 before returning to London.

After his return he renewed his association with The Philharmonia Orchestra and became a founding member of both the London Double Bass Ensemble in 1981 and of London Musici. As the 1980s continued he regularly worked with the English Chamber Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra and London Sinfonietta.

In 1990 The Philharmonia Orchestra awarded him the position of Principal Bass which he has continued to hold well into the new millennium. He has also continued to perform as a chamber musician with the Razumovsky Ensemble, the Soloists of the Philharmonia and the Corinthian Chamber Ensemble and as an orchestral member with Cerddorfa Dinas Powys Orchestra.

No stranger to the recording studio he an be heard on albums that include the London Violin Sound and Mercadante: Decimini/La Poesia.

In the 1980s he entered into the field of musical education where he became a teacher at the Royal College of Music and now hold the position of Professor of Double Bass. More recently he has also worked at the Razumovsky Academy as a Visiting Professor and held positions on the faculties of Trinity College and the Purcell School.

As a transcriber and author his Sevcik Opus 2 transcription for bass was published in School of Bowing Technique. He then went on to publish Essentials of Sevcik and Beginning Scales on the Double Bass while he was a teacher at the Pimlico Special Music Course.

His wife, Gill, is a violist.
