He is a flautist, piccolo player and author, often known as Steve, born in Boston who studied for degrees in the piccolo and flute at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Philadelphia Music Academy.
He has been active in the music industry of the East Coast of America for several decades and in the 1980s he became a member of the Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and remained with them for more than two decades as Principal Piccolo. He also held the same position with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops.
He has also performed with many other ensembles and orchestras that include the American Ballet Theatre, Baltimore Symphony, the Kirov Ballet, the Miami Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra and he has recorded with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta. He has performed at several nightclubs and in 2002 he began to play at Atlantic City’s Caesar’s as a featured flutist.
Also working in music by popular artists, he was accompanied singers such as Andrea Bocelli, Ray Charles, Bobby Rydell and Mel Torme.
As an author he has written the instructional A Basic Guide to Fingerings for the Piccolo and in the field of musical education he has given many masterclasses alongside artists such as Jean-Paul Rampal and for Washington D.C.’s Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair and the Flute Society of Philadelphia.
He is also the president of the piccolo headjoint manufacturing Tanzer Headjoint Co I Franklinville, New Jersey.
