Tang, Burchard

He is a violist born in Maryland, USA who started to learn the violin when he was 3 years old and changed to the viola when he was sixteen.  He became a winner of the Philadelphia Orchestra Albert M. Student Competition in 1993, which led to him giving a solo performance with the orchestra that same year.  Later he won the second prize in the Fischoff Competition’s Senior Division in 1996 and was also recognised at the Temple University Preparatory Division Concerto Competition.

In 1999 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Curtis Institute of Music and became a member of the viola section of The Philadelphia Orchestra that same year.

Other orchestras and ensembles he has performed with include the Brandenburg Ensemble as well as being Principal Viola with the Curtis Symphony and the New York String Seminar.  He has performed at many music festivals and is a founding member of the Dolce Suono Ensemble.

Recordings he has appeared on include him being a featured artist on Brahms/Bruch/Mozart: Clarinet Chamber Music as well as Invocation/Solo Piano and Chamber Music by Ingrid Arauco and Peter Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra.

In the field of musical education he is a teacher of viola and chamber music as a faculty member of Temple Music Prep and Philadelphia International Music Festival.  He is a primary Suzuki teacher in the Suzuki Alumni Project.
