Sutin, Elaine (15th May 1923-29th January 2019)

Violinist who attended Cleveland Heights High School and founded the Sutton Ensemble in the ‘60s.

She was married to Louis Teicher of Ferrante & Teicher and they had a daughter Susan, a pianist.

Other groups with whom Elaine performed include the Martha Graham Company, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Choral Society, the New York Pops, the Riverdale Choral Society, and the Staten Island Symphony.

On 13th December 1998, she was one of two violinists to perform a recital of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas with the Riverside Choral Society at Christ Church in the Bronx, New York.  She was the soloist on Ich bin vergnugt mit meinem Glucke, BWV 84 and one third of the string ensemble on the first part of Schwingt freudig euch empor, BWV 36.

The Sutton Ensemble teamed up with guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli in Sharp Theater at Ramapo College in the Garden State on 21st September 2003.  Their program included “Andante Cantabile” by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, “Fair Rosemarin” by Fritz Kreisler, “For Bucky and Friends” by Richard Lane, “Honeysuckle Rose” by Fats Waller, “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “Molly on the Shore” by Percy Grainger, “Nuages” by Stephane Grappelli, and themes from The Bad and the Beautiful and Laura by David Raksin.

On 19th March 2004, Elaine was honoured by the Bergen Freeholders as a Woman of Achievement.

She died in January 2019 from complications of dementia.  She was 95 years old.
