He is a musician and songwriter born in Droylseden, Lancashire, England.
In the 1960s he became a founder member of Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders who saw success with “Um Um Um Um Um Um” in 1964 and toured with Brenda Lee. They also had a No. 1 chart hit in the US with “The Game of Love”. After Wayne Fontana left the band he became the lead singer where they continued their success with “A Groovy Kind of Love” and the band appeared in the film To Sir, With Love with Sidney Poitier.
He went on to form the group Hotlegs in 1970 with Lol Creme and Kevin Godley and they had the hit “Neanderthal Man”. They carried on to become 10cc in 1972 when they were joined by Graham Gouldman. His songwriting, often in collaboration with Graham Gouldman, included their hits “I’m Not In Love”, “Dreadlock Holiday”, “The Wall Street Shuffle” and “Life is a Minestrone”.
In the 1980s he released two solo albums as well as collaborating with Paul McCartney for several years from 1981 and performing back up vocals on the album Give My Regards to Broad Street as well as appearing on Pipes of Peace.
