He is a violinist and conductor born in Freudenstadt, Germany, who studied the violin in Karlsruhe at Cologne University.
His teacher at Cologne was Reinhard Goebel, who was the founder of Musica Antiqua Koln, gave him the position of concertmaster with the ensemble and followed that by taking the same position with Les Musicians du Louvre.
In 1996 he became a co-founder and first violinist of the Schuppanzigh Quartet who give their performances on period instruments. The following year he debuted as a conductor with the Handel Festival Orchestra. Since 1999 he has been a guest violinist as well as the ensemble’s Artistic Director.
In 2000 he ventured into the world of musical education when he took on the position of conductor of the Baroque Orchestra of the National Academy of Music Trossingen, where he is also Professor of Baroque Violin. He has also taught at Karlsuhe’s International Handel-Akademie and at the Orchester-Akademie der Jungen Munchner Philharmoniker. 2013 saw him holding a series of Marie Burger master classes.
He performed as the concertmaster of the Concerto Koln for the period 2005 to 2008.
In the he has recorded over 30 CDs and his performances of sonatas by Johann Georg Pisendel and Sonatas KV 55-60 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart have won several international awards. He has also recorded the world premiere of works by the violinist Wilhelm Bernhard Molique with the L’Arpa Festante Orchestra and Christoph Spering which was released in January 2013.
