He is an English musician, singer-songwriter and dancer born Cathal Joseph Patrick Smyth and originally known as Carl Smyth.
The last member to join the group Madness in 1979, he had appeared with them several times prior dancing onstage. Aside from being known as their dancer he also plays the trumpet and various percussion instruments, and sings occasional lead vocals.
After they broke up in 1986 he and several of the band members formed The Madness but they disbanded after releasing one album. He became friends with the singer Morrissey who asked him to be his manager, which he declined, and at the same time he wrote the track “Green Eyes” for Suggs and appeared in his video of “I’m Only Sleeping”.
Madness reformed again in 1992 and has been active ever since and in the interim between recording and touring with them he has led the folk group Velvet Ghost.
