Showers, Shelley

She is a French horn player born Reading, Pennsylvania and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and during her student years won competitions at California’s Music Academy of the West and the Southern Methodist University in Texas.

She started her professional career as a member of The New Jersey Symphony before becoming Associate Principal Horn of the Cincinnati Symphony.  She went on to be a soloist and Principal Horn with the Utah Symphony and in 1997 was Principal Horn of the Cleveland Orchestra on their Grammy Award winning recording of Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique.  In 1997 she became a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra and has served as a member of the Board of Philadelphia Orchestra Retirees and Friends.

Other orchestras she has performed with during her career include American Ballet Theatre, Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia, New Haven Symphony, Pennsylvania Ballet and Solisti New York.

As a chamber musician she has been a performer and faculty member of the Kent/Blossom Music Festival and Aspen Music Festival as well as being a participant in the Utah Music Festival, the Nova Series and the Deer Valley International Chamber Music Festival.  She is a member of the Conwell Woodwind Quintet of Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University.

Recordings she has performed on include Mountains by Les de Azevedo,  Bernstein Narrates Bernstein: The Holocaust Remembered by Morris Bernstein, Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique by The Cleveland Orchestra and Peter Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra and the compilation Precious Water: River of Life.

In the field of musical education she has been a faculty member of Cleveland Institute of Music, Philadelphia Biblical University and Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance.
