Scott, Yumi Ninomiya

She is a violinist born in Japan who began to play the violin when she was 4 years old.  She took studies in Tokyo at the Toho Conservatory of Music followed by travelling to the United State to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in 1961.

She gave a solo performance with The Philadelphia Orchestra and joined the Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia in 1967 after winning the Senior Student Competition while at Curtis Institute of Music.  She later performed with the Curtis String Quartet from 1969 to 1981 and at the same time played with the Concerto Soloists of Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia.

In 1981 she became the concertmaster of the Main Line Symphony and performed with them until 2013.  In 1984 she became a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra and while with them she also played in the orchestra’s Chamber Music Series.  She is married to Henry Scott who is a retired bassist of The Philadelphia Orchestra and has two children.  She retired from the orchestra in 2016.

Other orchestras she performed with include the Japan Philharmonic and ABC Symphony and participated in the Casals Festival from 1994.

Recordings she has appeared on include Peter Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra.

In the field of musical education she has been a faculty member of Temple Music Prep, Temple University and the Curtis Institute of Music.
