Schieman, Paul

Artistic director, keyboardist, and oboist who graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, in 1978, with a Bachelor’s degree in Music.  He studied oboe with Peter Boman, Don Hyder, and Harry Sargous.  While still in Montreal, he worked as a church organist, taught oboe at his alma mater and at Vanier College, and performed with Le Studio de Musique Ancienne, the McGill Chamber Orchestra, and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

He became Assistant Principal English horn and oboe with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 1979.  In addition, he took on the responsibilities of Choir Master and Organist at St. Andrews United Church.  As if he didn’t have enough on his plate, in 1980 he started up The Alberta Baroque Ensemble, and he has been their Artistic Director ever since.

In 2001, he was enshrined in the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Hall of Fame.  He also received the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Medal in 2002 and the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005.

He has served as a Jury Member on the Edmonton Arts Council.
