Schaefer, Lora

She is an oboist, sometimes credited as Lora Schaefer-Berndt, born in Buffalo, New York who started playing oboe in the third grade at school and went to Interlochen Arts Academy in her high school years.  She earned her Bachelor of Music degree a Cleveland Institute of Music and took graduate studies at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.

During her early career she became Principal Oboe with the Kansas City Symphony in 1996.  She also performed with other orchestra that include the Cleveland Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.  In 2009 she became Second Oboe with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

A participant in several music festivals, she has played at Blossom Music Festival, Grand Teton Music Festival, performing with the Festival Orchestra from 2000 to 2009, National Orchestra Institute and Tanglewood Music Center.

Recordings she has performed on include the soundtrack of the film Lincoln with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

In the field of musical education she has presented master classes on a national and international level and been a faculty member of Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University.  She is as a member of the Executive Committee for the International Double Reed Society.
