He is a drummer and producer born in to a family in the entertainment business where his father was the TV comedian Soupy Sales and his brother Tony is a bass guitarist.
When he was young he became a member of his brother’s group Tony & The Tigers in Detroit, Michigan, and made his first recording with them. The song entitled “Turn It On Girl” had minor success locally and then in 1966 they appeared on the TV shows Swingin’ Time with Robin Seymour and Hullabaloo.
In the early 1970s he and his brother performed and recorded with the singer Todd Rundgren as original members of his group Utopia. They also worked with him on his solo recordings. In1976 he worked with Bob Welch in his trio Paris as their drummer and also a backing singer. Although the group were only together for a brief period, they managed to release two albums.
The following year he and his brother work with Iggy Pop on his Lust for Life and Hunt made his name known on the title track for what has been described as “one of the most famous and instantly recognisable openings in the history of rock music”.
In the late 1980s Hunt and his brother got the attention of David Bowie who invited them to become members of his Tin Machine. Into the 1990s and he was working with the group Tender Fury and appeared on their 1990 album Garden of Evil.
Throughout his career he has worked on many recordings and a few of these include Sound + Vision by David Bowie, In My Own Way by Michael Bruce, Still Searching for Soul by Corey Feldman, Heard it on the X by Los Super Seven, Nite City by Ray Manzarek, Big Townie: 2061 by Paris, TV Eye by Iggy Pop, Runt and Something/Anything by Todd Rundgren, Hired Guns by Sales Brothers, Cruel and Gentle Things by Charlie Sexton, Oy Vey Baby by Tin Machine and Kill City by James Williamson.
In the new millennium he moved to Texas and settled in Austin where he works as a session musician and a producer. He also became a member of Charlie Sexton’s band which was part of the Los Super Seven. Since 2009 he has been a member of The Hunt Sales Memorial.
In 2019 he released a solo album.
