Sabu, Paul (2nd January 1960-Present)

He is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, mixer, producer and composer born in California who took the name Sabu from his father who was the Indian born movie star Sabu Dastagir.   His mother, Marilyn Cooper, was also an actress.   Although a somewhat late starter, playing the guitar from fifteen years old, he quickly made up for it by beginning his professional recording career when he was nineteen.

He became a member of the new band Kidd Glove in the early 1980s after Motown had decided to start a Rock Division and held auditions for a new rock star.   Paul got the job as lead man and also started to write songs for the band with other Motown songwriters.  The debut self-titled album was released in 1984 and it was re-released with extra tracks in 2010.

Later in the 1980s he formed Only Child which released two self-titled albums that are still recognised today and which got him dubbed as an “AOR hero” and “L.A. Session King” by various melodic rock publications.

Aside from working with his bands, he also became a much sought after session musician, songwriter and producer for many other artists.  During his career to date he has worked with countless singers and band in the studio which has led to fourteen platinum and 11 gold recordings.  Some of these artists include Aneka, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Duran Duran, Sheena Easton, Heart, Little Caesar, Madonna, The Motels, Robbie Neville, Prince and John Waite.  He also co-wrote, performed on and produced Shania Twain’s debut album Beginnings.

Spreading his wings to work in TV and movies, his work as been credited on the soundtracks of shows and films such as Accused, Bad Guys, Baywatch, Beverly Hills 90210, Ghoulies II, Hard Rock Zombies, Sex and the City and Vice Versa as just a few of many.

Some of the albums he has released over the course of his career to date include Heartbreak, High & Mighty, Sabu, Paul Sabu and Strange Messiah.

In 2011 a poll for Kerrang magazine gave him the accolade of being No. 2 on their list of Favorite AOL Vocalists of All Time.
