Ryan, Colin

He is a cellist who studied at McGill University in Canada before taking further studies in Europe and the United States.

He became Principal Cellist of the New Chamber Orchestra of Canada prior to him becoming Principal Cello with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 1976.  He remained with the orchestra for 39 years until his retirement in 2014.

Other orchestras he has performed as a guest artist and/or soloist with include the Alberta Baroque Ensemble, the World Philharmonic Orchestra and the Pacific Baroque Orchestra.   He spent a summer season performing as Guest Principal Cello with the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

As a chamber musician he has performed with ensembles that include the Orford String Quartet, WindRose Trio and the Enterprise Quartet.

Outside of his orchestral and ensemble recordings he has been a bagpiper and marched with the RCMP Regimental Pipes and Drums.

Recordings he has performed on include the Lost Garden audio puzzle game along with albums that include Tommy Banks’ Christmas: Instrumental Music for the Holiday Season by Tommy Banks, Bashaw by Howard Bashaw, Good for Goodness Sake (starring Butch and Suzi) and Here We Come (with Butch and Suzi) The Country Ridin’ Preacher by Maralee Dawn, Footloose by Footloose and Pieces by Lyall Steel.

In the field of musical education he has been a faculty member of the University of Alberta’s Department of Music.
