He is a violinist, conductor and artistic director born in Friedrichshafen, Germany who studied in Germany and New York with the violinists Ramy Shevelov and Igor Ozim and the conductors Peter Eotvos and Michael Gielen and composition with Jack Brimberg.
In 1984 he became a member of Ensemble Modern as a violinist as well as performing with them as a guest conductor. He remained with the ensemble as a violinist until 1996 but continued to work with them as a conductor.
Often invited to be a guest conductor he has worked with many orchestras and ensembles that include the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, Collegium Novum Zurich, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Ensemble intercomtemporain, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Klangforum Wien, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, the NDR Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra National de Lille, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra along with several others. He has also been an operatic conductor and led many world premieres of productions with various opera companies in Germany and Austria.
As an artistic director he joined the Remix Ensemble Casa a Musica in Porto, Portugal in 2005 and has since appeared with the ensemble at many European music festivals. He was a founding member of Kammerakademie Potsdam where he took the position of first artistic director and has also held that position with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders.
His recordings have seen him winning several awards that include the Grand Prix du Disque, the German Record Critics Award and Echo Klassik as well as a Grammy Award nomination. In the field of musical education he holds masterclasses on conducting in Bavaria, Germany and he is a founder of the Remix Academy for ensemble musicians and conductors. He is also a regular teacher at various international ensemble academies located in Europe.
