Rubino, Jerry

Jerry Rubino has worn about every hat you can in the music business.  He studied cello at the Curtis Institute, attended Temple University and the University of Minnesota, and has a handful of degrees to show for it, in conducting, music education, and piano.

In 1974, he joined the faculty of Northwestern College in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

He started his own group in 1983, Jerry Rubino Plus, and “plus” describes his duties—arranger + artistic director + conductor + pianist—and their range of music:  choral + folk + gospel + jazz + opera + show tunes.

Carleton College has thrice dubbed him Distinguished Professor of Music, in the years 1999, 2003, and 2004.

Jerry is also the Minister of Music for Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church, which is located in Golden Valley, Minnesota.

In 2006, A Merry Little Christmas:  12 Popular Classics for Choirs hit the shelves.  He edited the book and arranged two of the carols:  “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” and “We Need a Little Christmas”.  His arrangements have also been included in books by four other publishing houses.

He taught summer classes at the Wesley Balk Opera/Music-Theater Institute at Augsburg College in 2009.

On 13th May 2010, he was a guest conductor of the Heartland Chamber Chorale for their Cathedral Classics series at Plymouth Congregational Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

In addition to his aforementioned activities, he spent twenty-three years working with the Dale Warland Singers, in a variety of capacities, including arranger, assistant conductor, associate conductor, director of music education and special projects, pianist, and vocalist.

He has been a member of The Philadelphia Singers, the chorus-in-residence of The Philadelphia Orchestra.

Jerry is the vocal jazz repertoire and standards chairman of the American Choral Directors Association’s North Central Division.
