Roihl, Daniel

He is a baritone, countertenor, composer, arranger, conductor and teacher born in Southern Florida who spent a lot of his time in New England from around 1990. He took studies at Phillips Andover Academy, Harvard and Yale, where he received a full merit scholarship by the Institute of Sacred Music. He later moved on to the University of Southern California in order to complete his doctoral dissertation in choral music.

As a singer he has been a member of the Harvard University Choir and sung on their holiday recording Christmas in the Busch. Other vocal ensembles he has appeared with are Cantus Pacificus, De Angelis Vocal Ensemble, Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum, Harvard Din and Tonics, Harvard Glee Club, Millennium Consort. Tanglewood Festival Choir and the USC Chamber Choir. He has also performed at several festivals such as the Baroque Music Festival, Corona Del Mar and the Los Angeles Bach Festival.

He founded The Concordia Society after he had graduated from Harvard and spent the next two years as the conductor of this 24 piece chamber voice ensemble. He has conducted Harvard’s Toscanini Chamber Orchestra and has been the Choral Conducting Intern for Chorus Angelicus.

In Pasadena, Florida he put together a concert series when he held the post of Minister of Music at St. James’ Episcopal Church. He has also recently been the Director of Music and the Arts in Massachusetts’ Congregational Church of Topsfield, the Music Director of Lexington’s United Methodist Church and the Co-Conductor of New Haven’s Elm City Girls Choirs..

Working on the stage and screen he has been the Sorceress in Dido & Aeneas by Henry Purcell in production staged at the University of Southern California and he can be heard on the soundtrack of the movie I Am Legend.

His compositions have been commissioned by many organisations such as Boston Youth’s Pro Music, the Lexington Methodist Church, St. Andrew’s Youth Choirs of Wellesley and the Harvard University Choir. As an arranger he has published several choral works that include “I Have a Soul To Be Saved Or Lost” and “Amen 2”. His “Kyrie and Gloria for Mixed Choir and Orchestra”, “Amen 2”, “Amen 3” and “Amen 4” have been recorded by the Harvard University Choir.

In the field of musical education he has been on the faculty of the World Mission University and the University of Northern California and joined Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts as Head of the Music Department in 2010.
