Roby, Paul

He is a violinist whose parents played violin and oboe and gave him his first violin lessons.  He then took studies with Mary Crowder-Hess and Roman Totenberg and entered the Curtis Institute of Music when he was 16 years old.

Before then he had debuted as a soloist with the Boston Pops Espalanade Orchestra when he was 12 years old and he went on to win prizes in various competitions.  In 1989 he was awarded the Davidoff Prize for Outstanding Artists at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival.

After graduation he became concertmaster in the Air Force Orchestra in Shreveport, Louisiana, and then became a member of the Baltimore Symphony followed by the National Symphony.  In 1991 joined The Philadelphia Orchestra as Associate Principal Second Violin in 2000.

In chamber music he is a co-founder of the Salzau Quartet.

Recordings he has play on include Peter Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra.

In the field of musical education he has been a college professor at various universities and colleges that include Kansas State University, Oklahoma University, University of Lowell and Centenery College.  He was the owner and director of Point CounterPoint Chamber Music Camp.
