Arranger, clarinetist and composer from London, England, whose grandmother was a pianist, which—along with BBC Radio 3—helped inform his young musical life.
Amongst his neighbours was violinist Simon Standage, whose wife turned Barnaby onto the clarinet. He studied under Katherine Tewson and attended the Guildhall School of Music and Juilliard.
In 1995, he debuted at the Purcell Room under the umbrella of the Park Lane Group musical series.
His discography includes: Daniel Hope – Schnittke/Takemitsu/Weill; Messiaen: Chamber Works; and, Thomas Ades: Living Toys.
He has also done a fair amount of work on film, television, and video games.
On the big screen, he arranged and composed music for 4.3.2.1 and played on the soundtracks of Finding Neverland, Miss Potter, State of Play, and With or Without You. He also composed music for the short films, Heartbreak Hotel and Plastic.
In fact, he first performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London on movie score. They invited him to audition for the principal clarinet chair, and he won it in 2000.
Other groups with whom he has worked include the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Conchord, the Endymion Ensemble, the English National Opera, the Glyndebourne Touring Opera, the London Sinfonietta, the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Winds, the Munich State Opera, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Royal Opera House, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and the Zanfonia Trio, which he co-founded.
His work in television has involved composing music for the made-for-TV movie, Bike Squad, and performing on the soundtracks Emma, Joe Maddison’s War, Lark Rise to Candleford, and Shackleford.
Gamers may have heard him whilst playing Fable, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and James Bond 007: From Russia with Love.
In the field of music education, Barnaby is on the faculties of the Guildhall School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, which is housed in Manchester, England.
