Robinson, Gideon

Violinist who attended the Royal College of Music and studied under the watchful eyes of Emanuel Hurwitz and Jaroslav Janacek. Before graduating, he was a member of Elastic Wardrobe No. 9 and wasitacaroracatisaw, as well as a handful of jazz ensembles.

In 1992, he became a member of The Philharmonia Orchestra of London. He has been very active in their Community and Education Department and their School Links program. In the autumn of 2004, he participated in a number of classes and workshops at Dunraven School, Julian’s Primary School and Streatham Wells School in Lambeth, England.

He entertained at a pre-concert recital at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London on 29^th November 2005, playing second fiddle in the first movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Clarinet Quintet”. The concert itself was a collaboration with soprano Barbara Bonney, who sang Mozart’s “L’amero, saro costante, K. 208”, “Non piu, tutto ascoltai… Non temer, amato bene, K. 490”, and “Voi avete un cor fedele, K. 217”. Bookending these arias were Mozart’s “Symphony No. 35 in D, K. 385” (“Haffner”) and Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 54”.

On 25^th September 2007, Gideon and other members of The Philharmonia Violin Quartet appeared on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune, performing George Gershwin’s “It Ain’t Necessarily So”, Mozart’s “Serenade” from Don Giovanni, Astor Piazzolla’s “Il Retrato di Alfredo Gobbi”, and Shostakovich’s “Galop”. They performed a program of traditional jazz at the Red Violin Festival in Cardiff, Wales, in October 2007.

On 23^rd April 2010, the Philharmonia Orchestra Chamber Ensemble appeared at the New Walk Museum & Art Gallery in Leicester, England. Their program comprised Julian Milone’s “Fantasy on Bizet’s Carmen”, Piazzolla’s “Tango Suite”, Maximo Diego Pujol’s “Il Palermo”, Maurice Ravel’s “Alborada del Gracioso”, and Kurt Weill’s “Eine Kleine Dreigroschenoper”.

Recordings on which he appears include Arnold Schoenberg’s arrangement of Johannes Brahms’ “Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25” and Schoenberg’s own “Concerto, Op. 36” and Pelleas und Melisande, Op. 5.

When he’s not performing with the Philharmonia, you can catch him playing live jazz at The Crown and Cushion in Great Gransden, Bedfordshire, England.
