He was a trumpeter, balaphonium player, arranger and teacher who was a member of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and appeared with the London Sinfonietta.
He can be heard on several recordings by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble including Greatest Hits, Music from the Royal Court, Renaissance Brass, Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition, Easy Winners, The Lighter Side and Sovereign Brass and his work with Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Mike Oldfield and the London Sinfonietta was featured on The Garden of Love.
As an arranger his work included Suite of Three French Dances by Claude Gervaise and the Emory Brass Ensemble, among others, has performed his work on Three Chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach.
As a teacher he tutored many students at the Royal College of Music in London.
His grandson, Ben, is also a trumpeter at the Guildhall and performs with the group Brass Souls.
