Pokorny, Andreas

Cellist from Vienna, Austria, who attended the Musikgymnasium and studied with Wolfgang Herzer, Hilde Langer-Ruhl and Eberhard Zwolfer.

Groups with who he has worked include Barocktrio Wien, the EOS-Quartett, the Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, which he joined in 1978.

On 11th November 1988, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra appeared at the University of Michigan Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor where they performed the overture from The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “Der Rosenkavalier Suite, Op. 59” by Richard Strauss and Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14 by Hector Berlioz.

The Eight Cellists of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra took the stage in Brahms Hall at Musikverein Wien on 14th December 2007.  Their recital included Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (Cantatas I-III) and Heitor Villa Lobos’s “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5” with mezzo-soprano Elisabeth Wolfbauer.

On 14th March 2008, the EOS-Quartett visited the Phillipsbergkirche where they interpreted Franz Joseph Haydn’s 7 letzten Worte Jesu’ am Kreuz.

They offered up a pair of quartets by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel and “Quintetto per pianoforte ed archi” by Cesar Franck, with Sandro de Palma at the keys, on 7th November 2009.

On 25th July 2010, they participated in the Bregenz Festival at Lake Studio for a wall-to-wall Mieczyslaw Weinberg recital.  The program, which featured pianist Doris Adam and soprano Talia Or, included the Polish master’s “Jewish Songs, Op. 13”, “Piano Quintet, Op. 18” and “Three Palms, Op. 120”.

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Eroica Trio interpreted Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano in C major, Op. 56” (“Triple Concerto”) in Foellinger Great Hall at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on 8th November 2011.  The concert concluded with Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73”.

On 26th November 2012, the Eight Cellists of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra gave a benefit concert at the Tiroler Landeskonservatorium.  Highlights included “Die Moldau” from Ma Vlast by Bedrich Smetana, the overture from Manon Lescaut by Giacomo Puccini and a suite from The Nutcracker by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
