Pensola, Jani (1975-Present)

Double-bassist from Finland who attended the Helsinki Conservatory, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Sibelius Academy. His teachers included Jussi Javas, Jorma Katrama, Robin McGee, and Duncan McTier.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Aurora Orchestra, the European Camerata, the Finnish National Opera, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonia Nova, the Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Uusinta Chamber Ensemble, and ZUM.

On 10^th July 2000, the Uusinta Ensemble appeared at Viitasaari Chapel where they performed James Clarke’s “Deformierte Texte 1”, Franco Donatoni’s “Etwas ruhiger im Ausdruck, Henri Dutilleux’s “Citations”, and Osmo Tapio Raihala’s “Damballa”.

ZUM offered up a program entitled “Gypsy Tango Inferno” on 19^th October 2006 that included “Ancient folk song and 11 seconds of tango” by Adam Summerhayes, “Daba Daba Da” by David Gordon, “Entrerriano” by Rosendo Mendizabal, “Jalousie” by Jacob Thune Hansen Gade, and “Quejas de Bandoneon” by Juan de Dios Filiberto.

On 15^th May 2008, Jani and pianist Joonas Ahonen and violinist Minna Pensola gave the world premieres of “Abassonata” by Eerik Siikasaari and “Trio” by Tauno Marttinen in the Chamber Music Hall at Sibelius Academy.

The LSO were joined by soprano Deborah Voigt on 12^th June 2009 for an evening of opera highlights that included “Abscheulicher” from Fidelio by Ludwig van Beethoven, “Dich, teure Halle” from Tannhauser and “Du Bist der Lenz” from Die Walkure by Richard Wagner, and “Ich kann nicht sitzen” from Elektra and “Zweite Braut nacht” from Die Aegyptische Helena by Richard Strauss.

On 12^th October 2010, the LSO appeared at Barbican Hall for a concert that featured Antonin Dvorak’s “Violin Concerto” with soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Leos Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass with organist Catherine Edwards and the London Symphony Chorus.

The LSO teamed up with vocalists Whitney Claire Kaufman and Andrew Playfoot and the London Voices for an evening of film music by Dimitri Tiomkin on 27^th October 2011. A few of the highlights: a suite from The Alamo, the overture from Cyrano de Bergerac, and the world concert premieres of “The Fall of Love” from The Fall of the Roman Empire and the theme from Search for Paradise.

On 19^th February 2012, the LSO, along with soloists Yuri Bashmet and Anne-Sophie Mutter, delivered the European premiere of Andre Previn’s “Concerto for Violin, Viola and Orchestra”.
