Peck, Marcia

She is a cellist who grew up in Belleville, New Jersey, to parents who were both musicians, studied cello in her school days and was awarded a scholarship hen she was 15  for a summer program from the International Congress of Strings which was funded by the American Federation of Musicians and ran for young string musicians from 1959 to 1970. She also earned her Bachelor of Music degree at the Curtis Institute of Music before taking further studies in Germany at the master class of the cellist Antonio Janigro.

She became fourth chair in the New Jersey All-State Orchestra and several years later in 1971 she became a member of the Minnesota Orchestra.  During her time with the orchestra she performed countless concerts and recordings as well as touring nationally and internationally and working with countless top conductors.  She also met and married her husband who was a horn player with the orchestra.  She retired from the Minnesota Orchestra in October 2021 after serving a tenure of 50 years, which was the longest in the orchestra’s history.

As a chamber musician she performed regularly at the Grand Teton Music Festival and in the orchestra’s Sommerfest for several years.

Recordings she has performed include Intimate Gettin’ Away with Murder by Patti Austin, A Changed Heart and I Shall See God by David Haas, All Are Welcome by Marty Haugen, Come to Me (Songs for the Christian Journey) by Michael Joncas, It’s Gonna Be Right by Cheryl Lynn, The Complete Works of Ravel by The Minnesota Orchestra, All True Man by Alexander O’Neal and Gloria by The Dale Warland Singers.

After her retiremenr she became a prize-winning fiction writer and received Artist Fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Jerome Foundation and the Loft-McKnight as well as gaining residencies in Georgia and Illinois.
