Olson, Broderyck “Broddy”

He is a violinist and teacher whose father, Ray LeRoy Olson was a teacher at the family-run Olson Music School in Edmonton and a founder of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 1952.  His father was his first teacher before going on to study at Alberta College, the Juilliard School and earning his Bachelor and Master”s degrees at the University of Alberta.  His summers were spent at the Indiana School of Music between 1970 and 1975.

In 1966 he became Assistant Concertmaster at the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and has remained with the orchestra ever since, being the longest serving members with over 60 years under his belt.  With the ESO he has performed at least 48 concerts of ITV’s (now Global) In Concert series and played in the acclaimed 1971 performance with Procol Harum.  He also performed in Procol Harum’s concert with the ESO in 2010.   He has held the position of President of the musician’s union of the ESO.

Recordings he has performed on outwith the ESO include Good for Goodness Sake and Here We Come by Maralee Dawn, It’s For You by Hammersmith and Shumka – A Celebration of Youth by the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers.

In the field of musical education he began teaching at the Olson Music School and went on to join the faculties of Alberta College, the Banfff School of Fine Arts and the University of Alberta.  He has also been a private teacher from his home. He has been an adjudicator at events that include the 2014 Fort Saskatchewan Music Festival.

He was nominated for a Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts Award in Edmonton in 2010.
