Mo, Chi-Yu (25 November 1970-Present)

Clarinetist from Great Britain who attended St. John’s College in Cambridge from 1989 to 1995, and graduated with a PhD in chemistry. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1995 to 1996, and his teachers included Richard Addison, Thea King, Angela Malsbury and Nicholas Rodwell.

After graduation, he joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as principal E flat clarinet. In 1998, he became sub-principal E flat clarinet of the London Symphony Orchestra.

On 13^th July 2007, the he and several other members of the LSO gave the world premiere of Rachel Leach’s “Happy Birthday Montesorri!” and the U.K. premiere of Laurent Perrenoud’s “24 Miniatures”. The recital was rounded out by Leos Janacek’s “Mlada”, Sergei Prokofiev’s “Quintet, Op. 39” and Franz Schubert’s “String Quintet in C, D. 956”.

He became principal E flat clarinet of the LSO in 2008. Other groups with whom he has worked include the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Endymion, the John Wilson Orchestra, the London Chamber Orchestra, London Musici, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Nash Ensemble, the Northern Sinfonia, the Philharmonia, the Worldwide Chinese Festival Orchestra, and the Worldwide Chinese Woodwind Soloists Octet.

On 12^th October 2011, he and pianist Charles Wiffen gave a recital in the Michael Tippett Centre at Bath Spa University. Their program comprised Jim Aitchison’s “Two Preludes to a Ground”, Luciano Berio’s “Lied”, Johannes Brahms’ “Sonata in E flat” and “Sonata in F minor”, Claude Debussy’s “Premiere Rhapsodie”, and Giacomo Panizza’s “Ballabile con Variazioni”.

He and pianist John Alley and violist Malcolm Johnston participated in an LSO Discovery Day Lunchtime Concert on 25^th May 2012, when they performed selected works of Max Bruch and “Trio” (“Kegelstatt”) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Recordings on which he appears include: Fresh Aire Collector’s Box, Vol. 1-8 by Mannheim Steamroller, Ideale: Songs of Paolo Tosti by Ben Heppner; The Dust Bowl Symphony and Music of Hope with the LSO; The Film & TV Music of Angela Morley by John Wilson & His Orchestra; and, the original motion picture soundtrack of Tamara Drewe.

In the field of music education, he has given master classes for the Kurmangazy National Conservatory in Kazakhstan and the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, and served a professor of E flat clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
